Can we call the Pandavas the first artificially inseminated babies?
What was the surname for people in Ramyana and Mahabharatha ?
Why all the characters in Ramayana are called with a ji..e.g Ram Ji, Laxman Ji, Hanuman ji..Raja Dasrath..e.t.c wherein Mahabharata is on first name basis like Arjun, Bhishm e.t.c
How many Sons did Draupdi have ?

they try to make us believe they were artificially inseminated.
they were not.
baaki jawaab nahi aate, teacher "ji"
I did wonder about that to be honest...thanks to my scientifically crapped up brain!
Surnames...don't have a clue actually!! Were they ever mentioned in the TV serials??
Hmmm..."Ji" for respect...maybe because Ram ji was Lord Vishnu ji's avatar...
Draupadi ke kitne baal bacche...bilkul nahin maloom!
Guys....go back to sleep...why are you up so early or are you guys in a different time zone....
Hehehehehe!
Different time zones, different time zones!
phir thik hai...
yes..'Ji' was added for respect, auroji :)
Lord Ram is often addressed as 'Ram Chandra','Ram Chandra ji'. Wonder if 'Chandra' was his surname. :)
Nahi Yaar... otherwise Laxman Chandra..Bharat chandra bhi hota...nah
Hmm..point hai.
waise, shayad uss time pe surname naji hotay thay...kyonki they prefixed father's name before one's name...like Dhashtraputra Ram, Rawanputra Meghnaat.
par main pata karne ki koshish karti hoon. I am curious now. :)
I have written to Devdutt, the famous mythologist. (http://devdutt.com/)
Let's see if he can answer this question :)
Good post! Let me try to answer one...
Pandavs were not artificially inseminated - in fact the Kauravs were! Pandavs were all results of extra-marital flings.
Oh yeah, now that you mention Subhadip, I do remember bits and pieces of the "Mahabharata" show on TV as regards the conception and birth of Pandavas and Kaurava...Actually I would love to watch it all over again!
mythology is full of symbology....so it is useful to not look at the finger but look at what the finger is pointing at....
eg. people think that krishna was some king of sex crazed god....with his 16 thousand gopis he was cavorting about with....the thing is that humans being human...reduce everything to their level of thinking....
the gopi's...were actually the senior most disciples of krishna...the world teacher....and radha being the most senior...
in the ordinary human mind...the highest union between 2 people is sexual union.....
the mind can translate spiritual events into common language only by symbols avaialble to their mind...it is like a person who knows french can only express him self in french and not english...
that is the reason sometimes in meditation a disciple may see themselves in sexual union with a guru....is becasue the human mind has no vocabulary to espress the spiritual union with guru or god....
reproduction methods of the current root race inhabiting earth, is very primitive......there are other means...on other planets , other universes...
ji- no one says ravan ji...
ram because he was the perfected human being...he was no god, neither did he claim to be......untill tulsidad made him one...the rest of the ji's...come out of the luster attached to the disciples/followers of a great teacher...i reckon...
arjun and gang were super mortal....just like us.....only god there was krishna....
some times i wonder if there was a real mahabharath or is it just an extroverted imagery of the internal tussle of man between the soul and ego...added on to by various story tellers....down the ages...
all other titles/sirnames in india at least... are actually discriptions, added to by story tellers....kind of like adjectives....see the trend still exisits.... batliwala.....
Thanks J for the perspective!
Science does you in...it does not let you think beyond what is apparent!! :)
@Rhapsody ...update please
@Shubho...stop being crass
@Jas... please use the net and order for the CD...
@Jyoti...one the answers are not provided by you... :)
Ravan was the bad guy...we will not call him as JI..Arayan stuff
The issue is alternative methods of reproduction...so insemination...
Actually Ram denotes the Arayan's and Ravana the Dravidians..it was the hight of war between these races...and the defeat of Ravana denotes the end of Dravidians ...during the Mahabharata...The dravidians to an extent were a part of the main stream society and faught with the arayans in many battels..however they never recovered their lost glory after the defeat of Ravana
The titels\Surnames came in with the english...it is not a Hindu System...however...
The answers to the questions I posted ....ummm...I don't have them
According to Devdutt, Surname is a western concept.
@Rahpsody : Thanks for the update...how about the other questions???
Devdutt's answers to
